After earning her degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Derby in 1995, Sarah's career took her from North London to New Zealand, India, and Eastern Europe, where she worked with children requiring specialist support. She later became a Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at Canterbury Christ Church University, published "The Special Educator's Toolkit," and pursued postgraduate qualifications in Teaching and Occupational Therapy Practice. In 2010, Sarah returned to clinical practice, focusing on paediatrics and medico-legal assessments. She continues to provide expert reports for disabled parents involved in Family Court cases and advocate for their rights and capabilities. Enabled2Parent was founded in 2019 as a direct response to Sarah's lived experience as a disabled mother. Her unexpected pregnancy, discovered during a medical scan at 30 weeks, set the stage for a challenging journey—one made even more complex by the fact that her husband was also disabled. Faced with scepticism from professionals who struggled to envision how two disabled parents could care for a newborn, Sarah navigated these challenges with resilience and determination. Her journey included a stay in a Mother & Baby Unit due to Sarah's long-term mental health condition, where she successfully demonstrated her parenting abilities and proved that she could care for her child independently. Despite facing ongoing monitoring from local authorities, Sarah persevered. Today, her daughter continues to thrive, a testament to the strength and capability of disabled parents. Combining her clinical expertise with personal experience, Sarah is committed to ensuring that disabled parents can approach parenthood with confidence and joy. Enabled2Parent provides tailored support, including advice, assessments, and resources for mothers, fathers, couples, and even grandparents. The organisation also addresses practical challenges such as housing, mobility, essential equipment, and financial support applications. Passionate about education and advocacy, Sarah works closely with professionals to improve understanding and support for disabled parents. Enabled2Parent continues to develop training courses to equip healthcare providers, social workers, and other professionals with the knowledge and skills to assist families in their care better. Sarah loves writing, enabling and teaching. She hopes to empower, enable and equip disabled parents to raise their children in the best way they can. She is excited that Enabled2Parent continues to grow and reach parents and professionals alike. She is very grateful to the Trustees and Volunteers for their commitment, support and guidance as they continue to work to develop the charity.
