Needs Assessment

Needs Assessment for Independent Living

As a disabled parent, you may be eligible for practical and financial support from your local council. If you need help with daily tasks such as washing, cooking, or dressing, the first step is to request a free care needs assessment. This assessment helps determine the support you need to live independently and as a parent. You can start the process by applying here: Apply for a Care Needs Assessment.

Home care

Assistance with cleaning, shopping, and other household tasks.

Special equipment & home adaptations

To improve accessibility and independence.

Daycare for your child

To provide additional support when needed.

Parenting assistance

Such as parenting classes or guidance..

Who Can Apply?

You can apply regardless of your income or savings. A trained professional, such as a social worker or occupational therapist, will visit you to assess your needs. You’re welcome to have a friend or family member present to support you during the process.

Preparing for Your Assessment

To make the most of your assessment, consider:

  • The challenges you face daily.
  • The type of support that would improve your life.
  • Specific needs, such as assistance getting your child ready for school or specialised equipment like adapted pushchairs.

After your assessment, you will receive a care plan outlining the support you’ll receive. For more details on care needs assessments, visit:

Paying for Care

As part of the assessment, the council will review your financial situation to determine eligibility for financial support. Even if you don’t qualify, they will advise you on available local services.

If eligible, you may choose to receive direct payments instead of council-organised care.

This allows you to:

  • Receive funding directly into your bank account.
  • Hire a care worker, personal assistant, or buy necessary equipment.
